Are you struggling with blue moods and feeling totally stressed out?

Are you feeling more anxious about things that never used to bother you in the past?

Are you having trouble getting a good night’s sleep and just having the sense of calm that you used to?

It may not be “just a sign of the times” it could be brain imbalances that have escalated from poor gut health.

You see, when most people feel this way, they will usually visit their primary care doctor and often prescribed an anti-anxiety medication. Unfortunately, anti-anxiety medication can cause GI distress.

These meds are known as SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). These SSRIs work by stopping nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing serotonin, which is a chemical that plays a vital role in mood regulation. It’s the key hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being and happiness. It’s our happy hormone, and this hormone impacts our entire body. It also helps with sleeping, eating and digestion… And can you guess where the majority of serotonin is found? Well, if you guess the gut – You are right!

Often though anti-anxiety medications can come with side effects such as blurry vision, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, feeling agitated, restless, weight gain, headaches, nausea, sexual problems, erectile dysfunction, sleep problems, and an upset stomach. So you see, the conventional approach to treating anxiety often overlooks that brain-gut balance.

At the center for functional health, I look for the root cause of the dysfunction. When the right questions are asked and it’s matched with the right testing, the right supplements the right type of nutrition and weight lifestyle, how a patient can go from feeling anxious to feeling amazing!
