I am often asked, “So, how do you stay fit?”
When I hear this question I have to remind myself not to go into doctor mode as I have a tendency to talk ad nauseum clinically (just ask my wife) and to provide an answer that is short, sweet and appropriately acceptable. No one really wants a lecture, especially at a gathering.
I tell them that staying in shape is like a recipe for a great tasting cake.
Making a good cake requires the right amount of flour, sugar, salt, butter, baking soda, etc. And when you first make a cake it may not be that good however, over the years you will hone and own your recipe.
It’s the same concept with staying in shape.
It takes a little of this and a little of that with a dash of extra. Well, you get it.
My recipe for staying in shape is as follows:
-The base is great nutrition. I pay attention to my nutrition very closely which has changed over the years as my body has different requirements in this decade compared to the decade before.
-Exercise 4 times a week consisting of high intensity interval training, resistance work with kettlebells, weights and bands; flexibility and balance exercises; and walking. As with nutrition, my body requires a different type of workout compared to five years ago and I have different goals.
-Intermittent fasting which allows my gut to rest, promotes fat burning, regulates my insulin levels, reduces oxidative stress (think rusting) and inflammation, and promotes cellular repair.
-The cherry on top of the cake (or frosting if you will) is vitamin and supplement support based upon my physiological needs
And that’s my recipe for staying in shape. If they want more, I invite them to speak with me at another time.
